As the owner of Luxe Homecare, I’ve discovered that many people don’t quite understand what a Home Healthcare team does. Often they think that it’s only for people who need rehabilitation services following an injury or a surgical procedure, and in many cases that is the reason agencies like Luxe are hired. But we do more than rehab care. We also work with cancer patients who need medical attention at home and those who have had life-changing surgeries such as a colostomy, in which a damaged part of the large intestine is bypassed and healthier tissue is diverted to an opening in the abdominal wall.
One of our clients, Lorraine, was a woman in her 60’s who had colon cancer which led to a colostomy procedure. At the point she contacted us she wasn’t sure if the rerouting would be permanent or if it was a short-term change in her life. She only knew that the idea of having to have a bag on her side where her waste would go was disturbing, to say the least.
When I spoke with Lorraine, she wasn’t as concerned about having our nurses and other team members come to her home as she was about changing the bag. She was still in the hospital and the nursing staff was doing it for her, but once she returned home she would have to do it herself.
“What if I don’t do it correctly? I’ll have a god-awful mess! I need someone who is patient and will watch me as I do it to make sure my technique is right. Do you have someone like that?”
I explained that we would send a skilled nurse who was experienced with ostomy care. I assured her that she would be in good hands adding that our home healthcare professional would walk her through the steps until she was at ease doing it on her own. I told her that our nursing team member would also show her how to properly clean and care for the “stoma”, the opening in her abdominal wall, to avoid the infections and blockages that could happen.
But having the ostomy nurse was only one of the services our home healthcare team would provide her. She would also need to walk, first for short strolls and then, as she healed, for longer ones. We would likely assign a physical and occupational therapist to work with her on that, and a social worker, psychotherapist or MFT to speak with her about any emotional or social concerns.
We helped Lorraine adapt to the result of her surgical procedure and we can help your loved one too.
