I recently spoke with Mary, an 80-year young woman who needs some help showering and getting dressed.  Her arthritis makes it difficult to stretch her arms, and because her fingers are so stiff, she can barely open and close the buttons and other fasteners on her clothing. She explained that a friend had recommended us, but admitted she had waited several weeks before contacting Luxe Homecare because she didn’t want to spend a small fortune on an in-home caregiver. I did what I always do in these types of conversations. I look for other options that can be used to cover the expenses of a caregiver. I asked if she had a long-term care insurance policy.

“Yes, yes, I bought it many years ago, but why are you asking me about that? I’m not dying; I just need some assistance in my home.”

Long-Term Care Isn’t Just for a Major Illness

Although long-term care has been a financial safety net for many who suffer from a terminal disease, it is not only intended for that purpose. It aims to help those who also suffer from severe cognitive impairment, long-term illness or those with chronic conditions. Unfortunately, many individuals own these policies and don’t realize their full potential. Several long-term care policies will cover the cost of an in-home care aide, as long as the healthcare conditions impact the activities of daily living. What is that?  ADL’s include:

  • Bathing
  • Toileting
  • Grooming
  • Dressing
  • Transferring
  • Cooking
  • Feeding

There are also Facility-Only LTC plans for those that need extra help and who reside in assisted living or skilled nursing facilities.

Mary listened and then told me that she was going to check her plan and call me back. Before she hung up, I added that one of the many advantages of working with our agency was that we have staff that will help to fill out and file any long-term care claims she may have at no charge. The first thing the next morning, Mary called me back. She said she was hiring us for in-home care services and wanted to know more about how we can help her with the claimant process.

Then she started asking me several questions, which I was more than happy to answer. Mary wanted to know:

  • Which carriers had we established relationships and for how long?
  • How long the claim process took?
  • How is the process handled?
  • How is the claim form tracked?

I explained that Luxe has worked with many long- and short-term care providers over the years and those established relationships help expedite and track our clients’ claims.

Mary is a happy client because she now has an in-home caregiver to help her with the basic activities of daily living and doesn’t have to pay out of pocket for it. Instead, the long-term care policy she so wisely invested in twenty-five years ago is taking care of it for her. She’s relieved, and we’re tickled pink that can help her.
