Aging in place helps to improve the quality of life of seniors and thanks to advances in technology, there are some products that can help you look out for your loved one should a fall happen. Falls are a major concern in the elderly and from 2007 to 2016 the fall death rate in the United States increased by 30% (CDC, 2017). Fall detection sensors can help alleviate some of these worries. From smart watches to wall-mounted radio-wave technology, we’ve rounded up some of the best fall-detection products on the market.

Apple Watch 5

Apple Watch Fall Detection
If the Apple Watch detects a hard fall while you’re wearing your watch, it taps you on the wrist, sounds an alarm, and then displays an alert. You have the option to contact emergency services or dismiss the alert by tapping “I’m OK.” In addition, after the call ends, your watch will also send a message to your emergency contacts letting them know that your watch detected a hard fall and dialed emergency services. This feature is available on the Apple Watch 4 or later.

Walabot Home

Walabot Home is a wall-mounted fall prevention device that uses radar to monitor occupants. It watches for a fall, and if it sees one, it will send an alert to an emergency contact. The 3D maps generated by the radar boasts knowing the difference between a person sitting, lying, standing and actually falling down. Its low-power radio wave means privacy is maintained (as opposed to a camera) and its radio waves can even penetrate walls.

VitalBand

VitalBand offers an emergency voice call-out and fall-detection watch which provides a more subtle way to monitor for falls. The smartwatch automatically calls and texts caregivers, medical professionals. It also has a panic button for manual signaling. The watch also tracks physical activity, heart and respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and sleep quality, as well as providing medical reminders.

FallCall Solutions

Fall Call Solution’s fall detector is a highly sensitive automatic fall detection sensor and app for Android users. Highly discreet, it can be worn on a normal daily belt. No buttons are needed and user/device interactions are executed through a clever and simple APP for Android smartphones. In the case of a fall it automatically communicates with the emergency services and provides geolocalization if the user is outdoors.
